A Snow Day, A Sausage Mash, and The January Reset

There is a specific, profound relief that washes over you when you wake up, pull back the curtains, and realise the universe has decided to hit the 'pause' button on your behalf.

No commute today. It was a snow day.

To be honest, I was incredibly relieved. I hadn't slept well, I went to bed far too late, and I woke up feeling completely unprepared for the reality of a working Monday. I wasn't in the right headspace. So, seeing that white blanket covering the world was a genuine blessing in disguise. Instead of battling into the workplace like a giant insect navigating a frozen tundra, I could log in from home.
The roads out there look absolutely treacherous. There are plenty of sliding cars outside my window, and with the temperature dropping again tonight, those slushy patches are going to turn into ice rinks. It’s going to be a perilous walk for anyone brave enough to venture out.

The "Grand Reset" (Eventually)

I haven't fully started the "Grand Reset" yet—you know, the January ritual of punishing oneself with kale and cardio—until I’m physically back in the workplace. However, the dietary choices are slowly shifting.
I didn't have a drop of alcohol last night, which is a start. It’s been a very, very boozy festive period. And I don’t regret that; you’ve got to let your hair down and enjoy yourself. As the old saying goes, "moderation in all things, including moderation." But I am looking forward to cutting down and feeling a bit healthier.

According to Alcohol Change UK, millions of us participate in "Dry January" every year to reset our relationship with drinking. While I might not be going cold turkey, getting back into the swing of a clearer head feels necessary right now.

Comfort Food and Bedtime Battles

In the spirit of snow days, we’re sticking to comfort food. Tonight, it’s sausage and mash, utilising some of the leftover Christmas potatoes. I was actually craving chips, sausage, and beans—a proper nostalgic tea—but the mash is a solid, grown-up compromise.

The domestic front has been busy, too. I’ve been restraining myself from sitting on the sofa and instead spent the day playing with the girls. It’s been lovely, but utterly exhausting. I made a concerted effort to get them up early this morning, despite the snow day vibes. The maths is simple: if they’re shattered, they might actually go to bed at a sensible time.

Getting kids back into a school routine after the chaotic sleep schedules of the Christmas holidays is one of parenting’s great battles. Sleep experts always say consistency is key, so hopefully, tiring them out today pays off tonight.

The World Outside the Window

While it’s cosy inside, it’s hard to ignore the fact that the news is pretty shocking at the moment.

The tragedy in Switzerland—the fire during the New Year celebrations—is just awful. It’s heartbreaking to think of young people, mostly teenagers, just out to enjoy themselves, and having life cut short like that. It’s a horrible age to be lost; just the beginning of everything.

Then you look across the pond to the news in America and Venezuela. The headlines about "kidnapping" a leader and the geopolitical maneuvering are frightening. Even putting aside the corruption and the stolen elections, the idea that a superpower can just reach in and extract someone sets a scary precedent. It really makes you wonder what comes next.
It’s a classic case of what psychologists call "Headline Stress Disorder." We sit in our warm living rooms, safe and sound, while doomscrolling through global chaos. It’s a jarring contrast.

A Blessing in Disguise

On a lighter note, we were meant to go to an anniversary market yesterday, but it was cancelled due to the forecast. Again, a blessing in disguise. If we had gone, we’d have been stuck in a car park deemed undeployable by the snow.
It’s a shame when plans fail, but looking at the weather, I have no complaints. Speaking of complaints, you always get people moaning about the council not gritting the roads. I can’t complain where I live; I saw the gritter go past at least three times last night. But when it’s -7°C with heavy snowfall, there is only so much salt can do. Sometimes, nature just wins.

Plodding Along

All in all, despite the cold and the scary news, today has been a good, quiet day. My thoughts for now are simple: just keep plodding along.

I’m hoping to get back into the swing of things properly soon, but for now, I’ll take the sausage and mash, the warm house, and the safety of a snow day.
