Learning difficulties Reflection

Learning Difficulties and Assessments: My Reflections

Throughout my time at university as an undergraduate ecology student, I struggled with exams and timed essays. I would spend hours revising and pouring my effort into assignments, only to be disappointed with my grades. It was infuriating to see other students breeze through with less work and achieve higher marks. This really impacted my self-esteem and made me question if I was unintelligent or incapable.

It turns out a big factor was my undiagnosed dyslexia and dyspraxia. These learning difficulties made certain tasks like planning essays very difficult for me. My essays would often lack structure because I had trouble getting all my ideas down during the planning stage. Dyslexia also slowed down my writing speed, so I'd run out of time on exams. The symptoms of dyspraxia like poor working memory didn't help either. I was putting in so much effort but just couldn't seem to get the results I wanted.

Being so self-critical and perfectionistic about my work only made things worse. I would get extremely down on myself when I didn't meet the high standards I'd set. This constant feeling of failure led to a lot of anxiety and procrastination. I dreaded exams and assignments, even though I loved learning about ecology.

It was such a relief when I finally got diagnosed after university. Suddenly it all made sense - I had been fighting an invisible battle against my learning difficulties this whole time. I learned not to be so hard on myself and that reading and writing just take more work for me. The diagnosis changed my perspective and approach to learning.

I do wish I had been diagnosed earlier and gotten support like exam accommodations. My mental health really suffered from constantly feeling not good enough. As a teacher now, I'm more aware of learning difficulties and the importance of support systems for students. We need better tools to identify issues like dyslexia, and effective training for teachers on how to teach and assess these students. I hope sharing my experience can increase understanding of learning difficulties and the toll undiagnosed conditions can take. With the right support and coping strategies, these students can thrive academically and emotionally.

Embracing the Spirit of Shackleton: My New Year's Resolution

Embracing the Spirit of Shackleton: My New Year's Resolution

Over the festive period, I've found myself deeply immersed in a world of exploration and adventure. Documentaries on Disney+, audiobooks by Michael Palin and Sir Ranulph Fiennes, and Dan Snow's history podcasts have all transported me to the frozen wastes of the Antarctic. The incredible journeys of Ross, Shackleton, and Franklin have captivated my imagination, but none more so than the exploits of Ernest Shackleton and his Endurance expedition.

Shackleton's story is, without a doubt, the greatest real-life tale of survival. Despite the odds, every member of the Endurance survived, making it one of the most remarkable survival stories in history.

Unparalleled Challenges

The expedition faced seemingly insurmountable obstacles:

  • The ship Endurance became trapped and eventually crushed by pack ice, leaving the crew stranded in one of the most inhospitable environments on Earth.
  • The 28-man crew survived for nearly two years in extreme Antarctic conditions, enduring temperatures as low as -20°F (-30°C).
  • They were isolated hundreds of miles from any potential rescue, with no means of communication with the outside world.

Extraordinary Leadership and Resilience

Several factors contributed to the crew's survival:

  • Shackleton's exceptional leadership skills kept morale high and united the team through unimaginable hardships.
  • The crew demonstrated remarkable resilience, adapting to constantly changing circumstances and overcoming numerous life-threatening situations.
  • They undertook a series of daring escapes, including a treacherous journey across the pack ice and open water to reach Elephant Island.

The Incredible Rescue Mission

The most astounding aspect of the story is the rescue itself:

  • Shackleton and five others embarked on an 800-mile (1,300 km) voyage in a small lifeboat, the James Caird, across one of the world's most dangerous seas.
  • Upon reaching South Georgia Island, Shackleton and two companions traversed treacherous mountains and glaciers to reach a whaling station and secure help.
  • Against all odds, Shackleton returned to rescue the remaining crew members on Elephant Island, with all 28 men surviving the ordeal.

Legacy and Impact

The Endurance expedition has left a lasting impression:

  • It showcases the triumph of human spirit, ingenuity, and teamwork in the face of seemingly impossible odds.
  • The story continues to inspire and captivate audiences, serving as a testament to effective leadership and the will to survive.
  • The recent discovery of the Endurance wreck in 2022, after 107 years, has reignited interest in this incredible tale of survival.

In conclusion, the Shackleton Endurance expedition stands out as one of the greatest survival stories due to the extreme challenges faced, the exceptional leadership displayed, and the miraculous rescue that brought all 28 crew members home alive against overwhelming odds.

It's clear that survival was largely due to Shackleton’s personal characteristics: his ability to see the positives in every situation, maintain crew morale, give members a sense of purpose, and demonstrate resilience, perseverance, empathy, emotional intelligence, adaptability, flexibility, and leading by example. This makes Shackleton the ultimate role model.

So, this year, my New Year's resolution isn't about dry January or fad diets. My plan for 2025 is to be more like Ernest Shackleton, and here's why:

Lessons from Shackleton

Optimism and Resilience
Shackleton's unwavering optimism and resilience in the face of adversity are legendary. He believed that "optimism is true moral courage" and consistently inspired confidence in those around him. By cultivating a positive outlook and persevering through challenges, I can overcome obstacles and maintain motivation in difficult times.

Empathy and Emotional Intelligence
Shackleton excelled at understanding and managing the emotions of his team. He prioritized the well-being of his crew and was skilled at identifying and addressing individual problems sensitively. Developing my emotional intelligence can help me build stronger relationships, lead more effectively, and navigate complex social situations.

Adaptability and Flexibility
In rapidly changing and uncertain conditions, Shackleton demonstrated remarkable adaptability. He was willing to adjust his approach based on the needs of his team and the situation at hand. Embracing flexibility in my own life can help me navigate unexpected challenges and seize new opportunities.

Leading by Example
Shackleton consistently led from the front, taking on difficult tasks himself and demonstrating the behavior he expected from others. By embodying the qualities and work ethic I wish to see in others, I can inspire those around me and build credibility as a leader or team member.

Creating a Shared Purpose
Shackleton was adept at developing a clear, shared purpose for his team. By articulating a compelling vision and aligning others around common goals, I can foster unity and motivation in both personal and professional endeavours.

Balancing Leadership and Management
Shackleton skilfully combined leadership with effective management. He maintained structure and routine while also providing inspiration and direction. Developing both leadership and management skills can help me organize resources efficiently while also motivating and guiding others towards success.

Authenticity and Humanity
Despite his strengths, Shackleton was not afraid to show his humanity. He was authentic in his interactions and acknowledged the gravity of situations while maintaining resolve. Embracing my own authenticity can help build trust and stronger connections with others.

By incorporating these characteristics into my own life and leadership style, I can enhance my ability to navigate challenges, inspire others, and achieve success in various aspects of life. Here's to a year of embracing the spirit of Shackleton!

Perfection: The Art of Self-Sabotage

Perfection: The Art of Self-Sabotage

## The Double-Edged Sword of Perfectionism

Perfectionism is often regarded as a desirable trait, pushing individuals to strive for excellence and achieve high standards. However, this relentless pursuit of flawlessness can become a double-edged sword, severely impacting one's progress and mental health.

**The Motivational Aspect of Perfectionism**

On the positive side, perfectionism can motivate individuals to give their best. It encourages meticulousness, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic. This drive can lead to significant achievements and a sense of accomplishment when goals are met. However, the dark side of perfectionism often overshadows these benefits.

**Psychological Toll of Perfectionism**

Perfectionism is closely linked to various psychological problems, including stress, anxiety, and depression. The constant pressure to meet unattainable standards can lead to chronic stress and anxiety, as individuals fear failure and judgement. This stress is compounded when perfectionists fail to meet their own high expectations, leading to self-doubt and despair (Mandel et al., 2022; WebMD, 2023; Greenspon, 2022).

Research indicates that self-critical perfectionism is a significant risk factor for depression. It predisposes individuals to think and behave in ways that exacerbate depressive symptoms, creating a cycle of stress and mental health issues (Mandel et al., 2022; Kang, Mandell and Eadeh, 2022). Moreover, perfectionists often experience low self-worth and a heightened vulnerability to imposter syndrome, where they feel inadequate despite their accomplishments (WebMD, 2023).

**The Monkey Trap Analogy**

A powerful analogy to understand the trap of perfectionism is the "old South Indian Monkey Trap," as described in Robert Pirsig's *Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance*. In this trap, a monkey reaches into a hollowed-out coconut to grab rice but cannot withdraw its clenched fist. The monkey is trapped by its inability to let go of the rice, symbolising how perfectionists can become trapped by their own rigid standards and inability to let go of their need for perfection (Sirois, Molnar and Hirsch, 2022).

**Rethinking Values and Letting Go**

To escape the perfectionism trap, individuals must reassess their values and decide whether to continue being trapped by them or to seek freedom. Embracing a mindset that allows for mistakes and learning from them, rather than fearing failure, can lead to healthier mental and emotional well-being. This shift in perspective can help perfectionists find a balance between striving for excellence and accepting imperfections (Greenspon, 2022).

**Conclusion**

To summarise, perfectionism is indeed a double-edged sword. Whilst it can drive individuals to excel, it often leads to despair, self-doubt, and various psychological issues. Understanding the detrimental effects of perfectionism and adopting healthier coping strategies can help individuals achieve their goals without sacrificing their mental health.
